EDITORIAL
A huge thanks to everyone who came to Social Works? Live last week at Manchester School of Art! We’re really grateful to everyone who came along and shared their practice as well a their experiences and ideas about social art. There were some really meaningful conversations had, lots of brilliant work showcased and some exciting new connections forged. We hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did!
For May's Artist of the Month we've selected Cardiff-based artist James Moore. We talk to him about his painting practice which explores the artificial nature of visual culture.
We are delighted to announce the appointment of two new artist Trustees, Holly Slingsby and Fiona Grady. We are proud that two more Axisweb artist members will join the Board of Trustees and help to strengthen the mission and vision of supporting artists.
Tony Heaton was selected for the Artist in Residence programme at The Art House in March 2019. Whilst there Tony created a series of new works including prints, sculpture and a neon piece. We were commissioned by The Art House to make a film about Tony's residency.
We have more copies of our Social Works?: Open for sale. Social Works?: Open speaks to the precariousness of socially engaged practice during an extended period of government-led cuts to arts funding across the UK, and the continued importance of maintaining and supporting a critical voice within socially engaged art.Contributors include: Jen Delos Reyes, Kerry Morrison, R.M. Sánchez-Camus, Claire Mead, They Are Here, Harvey Dimond, Lauren Velvick, Les Monaghan and Joe Cotgrave.
In a special Playlist we present a selection of films that were shown at Social Works?: Live on 26 April 2019. Featuring films by Jody Wood, Axisweb and Take A Part.
In our monthly What's On Guide we share events from our Axis Directory members that are happening in April.
