Five2Watch: COSTUME

For #Five2Watch this week we've selected five artists who create costume for performance and participation: Victoria Rance, Morwenna Catt, Charlotte Barlow, Rutter and Bennett and Eldi Dundee.

Caterpillars, 2009

Victoria Rance

Installation view of knitted 'sculpture to wear'. This is from a series made after spending time in a field looking at harmless insects which protect themselves by imitating dangerous species (Batesian mimicry); in particular those using yellow and black. Two children wore the sculptures which are french knitted from hand dyed string.

Moveable Feast, 2016

Morwenna Catt

A temporary, outdoor, celebratory installation combining eye catching, large scale visual artwork costumes and celebratory work created by professional artists alongside workshops and drop in sessions with adults and children.

The aim of the Moveable Feast is to create a welcoming and playful hub of activity that provides colour and spectacle as well as an appropriate backdrop for additional activities such as; performance, storytelling, demonstrations of art and craft, perhaps even cookery and local produce.
The installation comprises specially themed structural pieces alongside celebratory flags, carnival style puppets and wearable art pieces. Everything within the ‘Feast’ is lightweight and portable, allowing it to be transported from place to place by hand, at a moment's notice, in a processional style, by members of the public and participating artists creating movement, noise, celebration and spectacle!

The concept behind Moveable Feast has its roots in folkloric tradition, festivals, storytelling, mummers plays, banqueting and procession. It uses the concept of the “FEAST” in its widest, timeless sense, that of a community coming together to celebrate.

Moveable provides a high quality arts experience for visitors and participating artists and brings an element of spectacle to events. The feast can be specially themed for events with specially constructed key pieces.

Phalanges, 2014-2015

Charlotte Barlow

Latex gloves, liquid latex, sunflower oil, mud - the ongoing work involves various numbers of Phalanges in different locations - people are covered and tied into hundreds of blown up latex gloves with little vision. They wander, shuffle and jump around; as they move a rubbery sound is created and gloves are shed.

Gunfighter, 2017

Rutter and Bennett

‘Gunfighter’ is one of a series of wearable soft sculptures. This one is derived from a collage called ‘Gunfighter’ which refers to the transformation of everyday objects into ‘props’ for imaginative narratives and stories, much as a child might reinvent objects such as sticks, tools and household implements as part of an imagined world. It might be a way of removing oneself from unpleasant situations.

The sculpture was designed to be animated by the wearer, who is distorted and constricted by it. The collage was digitally printed onto fabric and sewn together on our old and beautiful hand cranked Singer 201K sewing machine, working from patterns cut ‘directly’ and by eye.

Prototype Performance Plinths, 2013-2014

Elidi Dundee

For a 6 month artist residency with LoopArt13 in Creekside, Deptford, Dundee explored possible forms and materiality for a future participatory performance and video installation.

The concept is a work in progress, and the materials used are for maquette purposes rather than finished product. The intended materials and processes are subject to budgetary considerations: stone, marble, hardwood, steel, bronze, ceramic, glass - materials which can withstand outdoor conditions.

The cover photo is obviously not intended to be stood upon, but the suggestion is that it could perhaps be worn.
