    Artist Statement

    I have been a practising performance artist since graduating in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College in 1989. I studied at the Centre of New Dance development, Netherlands for 1full time year. I have integrated dance and movement into my work gaining several commissions from Chisenhale Dance space including New Choreographers award in 1992, as well as curating and showing my work in a research project and a European conference there. In 2007 I was given a residency at Chisenhale where I made a performance installation. I was a member of an International performance Network for six years where I performed in Copenhagen, Lisbon, Nuremberg and Liverpool. I studied one year full time at the European dance development centre in the Netherlands in 1993. Over the years I have collaborated with artists Tanya Syed, filmmaker, Felicity Croyden, artist and many others including Florence Peake and Joe Moran. In 2007 I made a performance on the Black mountain and performed in the local Miners theatre and a film which has been screened in it's own right called Daughters on the Mountain with Film maker Tanya Syed and dancer Eleanora Allerdings. In 2008 I was commissioned to make a performance installation called Conception Vessel, for the Herbert Gallery in Coventry as part of the Summer dancing festival. In 2012 I completed an MA in Fine Art at Swansea Metropolitan University. In Sept - Nov 2013 I pursued a research and development project in my own practise with 4 other performers

    CV & Education

    Jessica Lerner works in dance, performance and fine art and is currently based in Brynammnan, Carmarthenshire. She has been a practising performance artist since graduating in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College in 1989. During that time she has integrated dance and movement into her work, gaining several commissions from Chisenhale Dance Space, London including a New Choreographers award in 1992. She was a dancer in Catherine Tucker's Dance Company from 1990 -1992. In 1993 she spent a year studying at the European Dance Development Centre in Arnhem, Netherlands. Returning to make several solo pieces performed at Union Chapel Studio Theatre, London and developing workshops in Movement for Performance Art, where she taught at Morley College.

    In Jessica’s early career she was a member of the International Performance Network for six years and performed in Copenhagen, Lisbon, Nuremberg and Liverpool and London. She hosted and organised a conference at Chisenhale Dance Space in 2001.

    She has made collaborative work with Felicity Croydon (Max factory), on several occasions and has also worked with dancers Joe Moran and Florence Peake. She has Instigated and curated group shows and research.

    Moving to Wales in 2002, she took some time out to set up and run a village shop with her partner.

    In 2006 she made an exchange with German dancer and former Arnhem classmate Eleanora Allerdings, first co-devising a piece in Furth, Germany, then on the Black Mountain, Wales. Jessica set up Shakeholes, a collective for artists and dancers working in her area for this project.

     In 2007 she was given a residency at Chisenhale where she made the performance installation Surfaces also including performer Felicity Croydon and visual artist Paula Madden

    In 2008 Summer Dancing festival in Coventry, curated by Florence Peake commissioned Conception Vessel, an installation and performance in The Herbert Gallery. Devised and performed by Jessica and constructed with assistance from dance students and Gian Paolo Cottino.

    In 2012 Jessica completed her MA in Fine Art and Contemporary Dialogues allowing her to investigate areas such as philosophy, feminism and performance theory in conceptualizing and writing about her practice. This brought her work into site-specific and video installation.

    Recently her film Daughter on the Mountain made with Filmmaker Tanya Syed was screened at Maynard Comes Home curated by Simon Whitehead, May 2013 and again in the conference Environmental Futures at the Wales Millennium Centre. 

    Since sept 2013 Jessica has been working towards Being With, a gallery based movement performance with performers Eeva-Maria Mutka and Stirling Steward. She has shared her practice for this project through workshops and as a visiting artist in Higher education.
