Noel Williams' residency was the first of a number of writing based residencies. There was a heavy focus on collaborative work with artists working in other disciplines. What began as a focused writing project grew into an exciting cross-disciplinary project over the course of a year with funding from Arts Council England for the collaborative projects with artists culminating in the large scale exhibition, Exploding Poetry. In collaboration with John Clark, acting as curator, and other poets and artists, Noel's poetry was quite literally brought off the page and placed at the centre of a series of art installations. In other spaces, computers randomly generated poetry, visitors manipulated words on walls and stones, whilst balloons exploded scattering poetry across the floors of the galleries.
