Boulton’s paintings are nature morte of flora. Flowers are memento mori. They are fulsome and life affirming but are fleeting, reminding us of the ephemeral nature of life. The acknowledgement of passing time is central to Boulton’s work, both in subject matter and through the building up of layers of paint over time. She thinks of her paintings as timelines on a tree, each layer holds it’s own memories and is integral to the finished piece. Boulton often works in series responding to historical references within this genre.

Boulton paints from the memory, developing abstract sensibilities through colour and form, whilst responding to her current feelings. Her desire to respond to the memory of the initial image is eventually abandoned as the work writes it’s own narrative in the layers of paint and marks.
She employs a responsive working process: one mark leads onto the next, as the painting evolves she adds and removes paint and turns the canvas to destabilise her process. Compositional tensions evolve through gestural marks juxtaposed next to carefully painted lines. She deliberately leaves traces of each layer visible, revealing the paintings journey. Sometimes she paints from the same memory over and over again noting how the present filters and manipulates the memory. She combines feelings and both conscious and unconscious responses via the process of painting.
